There are many sites that talk about living
large in a small space, or making small spaces look big.
But there aren’t many that celebrate and honor the
smaller house, which I affectionately call The Jewel Box®
Home.
I have fallen in love with The Jewel Box® Home,
but that was not always the case. Not long ago I was consumed
by big-house envy.
In my neighborhood, home ownership can be a competitive
sport and I happily joined the race with the purchase of
a small house in ‘The Village’. Serious
competitors, after living a few years in ‘The Village’,
buy a larger house in ‘Swellsville’. Elite
athletes build an addition onto their ‘Swellsville’ home. World-class
competitors tear down the original ‘Swellsville’ house
and build another in its place. |

By the way, ‘The Village’ and ‘Swellsville’ are
real places. The movie She’s Having a Baby,
with Kevin Bacon, was filmed in ‘The Village’.
I had lived in ‘The Village’ well over five years,
when a good friend on my street, moved to ‘Swellsville’. A
few months later, neighbors doubled the size of their house
with an addition. I badgered my husband to move. He refused
and I became an expert at decorating, entertaining and living
with two teenagers and my husband in an 1800 square foot house.
To my surprise, I loved the ease and comfort of small home
living, and the financial freedom that comes with it. I also
felt good that my house left only a small footprint on the
Earth. The Jewel Box® Home was born.

Champagne
Pomegranate Liqueur (I prefer Pama)
Strawberry for garnish
Fill a fluted glass 3/4th full with
champagne.
Top the glass off with 1/4th pomegranate liqueur.
Garnish with a strawberry and enjoy!
